Following the successful delivery of the Cell 1 Buttress Construction at Granny Smith, MLG was appointed by Gold Fields as the preferred contractor to deliver the Cell 3 Stage 3F tailings lift.

The works were executed from September 2021 through May 2022 with an investment greater than $3.5 million, focusing on embankment raising, water management improvements, and safe access while the facility remained operational.

The scope included bulk earthworks to form the lift and achieve the specified wall height and geometry. Tailings pipework was removed and reinstated to suit the new lift configuration, ensuring reliable service and minimal downtime. Construction material was harvested from Cell 2 where specified, then conditioned, placed, and compacted to meet design density and quality requirements. A comprehensive quality assurance and quality control document register was maintained throughout delivery to support verification of materials, compaction, and line and level.

The program also included a decant lift, with pump removal and reinstatement to align with the raised embankment and to improve water recovery and operational efficiency. Day worked tasks were completed across the TSF timeline to support interfaces, access, and ongoing production, all while maintaining safety and environmental compliance.

This project demonstrates MLG’s capability to deliver complex tailings infrastructure under live conditions, ensuring secure embankment performance, improved water management, and dependable access for continued operations at Granny Smith.
