Following the successful delivery of projects at Gruyere and Agnew, MLG was appointed by Gold Fields as the preferred contractor to construct the Cell 1 buttress at Granny Smith Gold Mine.

The works were executed over a six-month program from January to July 2021, targeting embankment reinforcement, seepage control, and safe access for operations and inspections.

The scope commenced with geotextile coverage and formation of the buttress foundation layer to provide separation, filtration, and bearing capacity for subsequent lifts. MLG completed backfilling of the former TSF storage area to achieve design geometry and compaction standards. The buttress was constructed to engineered specifications with bulk earthworks, placement, and trimming to line and level, delivering a robust embankment that integrates with existing TSF structures.

To support ongoing operations, MLG built access ramps for Cell 1 works and inspection activities, enhancing safe movement for equipment and personnel. Toe drains were installed along the embankment to intercept and convey seepage, complemented by construction of an inspection road that provides reliable access for monitoring and maintenance. Seepage pump installation and associated pit works were delivered to improve water recovery and control, minimising hydraulic pressure and enhancing long-term performance of the facility.

The project was delivered under live TSF operating conditions with disciplined interface management, quality assurance, and environmental controls. The outcome strengthens embankment stability, improves drainage efficiency, and supports the Client’s operational and compliance objectives at Granny Smith.
