MLG is proud to share the return of TK004, affectionately known as “Bill,” to active service following a full refurbishment. This significant restoration celebrates MLG’s rich history and honours the company’s journey from its early days as Leahy Haulage to the industry leader it is today.
Originally purchased in 2004 by MLG’s founder, Murray Leahy, TK004 was among the first road trains in what has grown into a formidable fleet of over 150 prime movers. After 17 years of dedicated service, the truck was due for an overhaul. To pay tribute to MLG’s roots, TK004 was meticulously restored to feature the original Leahy Haulage paintwork, preserving a vital piece of the company’s legacy.
“We thought it was only fitting that we turn around and give it a full restoration. We chose to brand the truck in the old Leahy Haulage look … to capture that point in time that is part of our history.
“For me, the refurbishment of this truck is about making sure that we take time to remember those that have gone before us, and the efforts that they put in to creating opportunities for us.”Murray Leahy Managing Director MLG Oz Limited
The significance of this truck extends beyond its role in MLG’s operations. Named in honour of Private William J. Leahy, who served and tragically lost his life in action on April 9, 1917, TK004 carries a story of resilience, heritage, and respect. The restoration is not just a refurbishment; it is a tribute to the past, a recognition of the company’s evolution, and a testament to the values that continue to drive MLG forward.
Adding to this rich history, a picture was taken of Bill and four of his five brothers just before he departed for World War I. The six brothers—Micheal, Jack, Timothy (Murray Leahy’s great-grandfather), Paddy, Bill, and Joe—originally walked from Tipperary to Cork in Ireland in approximately 1909 to embark on a new life in Australia. While the first five made the journey and ultimately settled in the Pithara/Dalwallinu region of WA, Joe, had to return to the family farm in Tipperary.
“I think [Bill] really stood for what it is to be Australian. He was someone who paid the ultimate price for (military service) but if they hadn’t done that, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

The refurbished TK004 is a Kenworth T908 powered by a Cummins X15 620 horsepower engine with AdBlue after-treatment, meeting the latest emissions standards. The rectification work was predominantly carried out by Jeremy Keech and Les Harris, with all non-paint-related refurbishments completed in MLG’s Kalgoorlie Maintenance facility.
MLG extends its gratitude to City Panel Beaters and Truck Repairs for their exceptional work in restoring TK004’s paneling, and the dedication of MLG’s Yindi Way Workshop Team, whom worked tirelessly to bring this cherished truck back to its former glory. The truck has undergone extensive re-plumbing, rewiring, and mechanical upgrades, ensuring it is ready for many more years of reliable service.
TK004 was originally driven by Allan Richards, who recently retired after spending over 20 years with MLG. The photo below captures Allan and Murray Leahy standing together in front of the truck, reflecting on the truck’s journey from its early days to its newly restored state.
Now, TK004 is officially back on the road, ready to continue its journey. This restoration is more than just a nod to the past—it is a celebration of MLG’s ongoing commitment to innovation, heritage, and excellence.
